Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

Abortion is a tragic outcome for any mother to have to consider; however, simply making abortion illegal will only increase the number of illegal and unsafe procedures performed. Until we target the root causes of unintended pregnancy, abortion should be accessible and safe in all cases: risk to the mother’s heath, rape or as part of a woman’s healthcare options. Sex education must be overhauled and modernized and birth control should be free and easily accessible for men and women alike.

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?

The United States must take a balanced approach to defending its citizens from threats and terrorism, both foreign and domestic. Primarily, we must leverage our extensive network of intelligence agencies, combined with our regional allies, to make accurate threat assessments. Once a threat is identified, economic and political pressure must be the first action taken. Only after diplomatic efforts are exhausted should we take a forceful military position; as such, keeping our military well-trained and force-ready is crucial for timely response when needed.

What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?

The tyrannical rule of Great Britain inspired the Founders to create a system of three separate, empowered, yet limited branches for governing our country. Having grown weary of a monarchy abusing broad powers, the Founders enacted a functional separation between executive, legislative, and judicial responsibilities. They created a system designed to ensure the branches are held equal in power, unable to overtake one another, and defined specific, prevalent issues of their time.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I was baptized at the age of 7, became a Christian in the summer of 1999, and was confirmed in the Methodist church in 2000. I currently attend The Harvest United Methodist Church in Sienna Plantation. Because I am imperfect, Christ, in His perfection and without blame, died to atone for my sins. He was raised from the dead and therefore made a way for all who believe in Him to live with God in Heaven for eternity. I value empathy, servant leadership, compassion, growth, balance and integrity and will use these values as a Congresswoman.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Moderate

Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.

Moderation is not ‘luke-warm’, just the opposite in fact. Moderation is doing the hard work of bringing together differing opinions and turning them into lasting policy that supports all. The job of a Congressperson is to represent their constituents, not a party or special interests. By running as an Independent, I am free to listen to my diverse community, which has historically voted 60% Republican and 40% Democratic. In a such balanced district, it’s unfortunate that our current representative votes 96% of the time with his party, rather than his district.

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

I will work to enact policies that address the unique health needs of everyone. Cultivating healthy, vibrant communities is not only financially and socially valuable, it’s a moral imperative. The system must offer choice, cover pre-existing conditions, and provide a safety net to support the marginalized. It must be financially accessible by individuals, small businesses, and large corporations alike, and there should never be a question of choosing between health or affording the care needed.

What role should government play in boosting the economy?

In times of economic crisis, the government may take a more direct role in injecting confidence and financial support into the economy until it stabilizes. However, under normal economic circumstances, the government should allow free enterprise to direct supply and demand, focusing instead on specific federal roles: trade policies, financial regulations, and infrastructure improvements. Ensuring imports and exports are exercised in a fair, global market boosts economic growth and encourages domestic expansion. Financial regulations ensure domestic markets are balanced and allow new, innovative companies to compete in an equitable way. A modern, robust infrastructure, both physical and digital, is mandatory for widespread economic growth and efficient domestic trade.

What changes should be made to the tax code?

Tax law must be simple, straightforward and easy to understand, focused on the financial well-being of our country and it citizens. Corporate tax loopholes, pass-through income, and breaks for the ultra-wealthy should be terminated; Taxes should apply to businesses and individuals equitably. We need freedom from special interests to make these changes a reality; Political gamesmanship and excessive lobbying by the tax preparation industry must be swiftly extinguished.

What is the best way to bring down unemployment?

More focus should be placed on careers that do not require 4-years degrees. An estimated 3 million skilled-labor jobs remain unfilled in the United States, many only requiring a professional certification or on-the-job training. Years of disregarding these jobs as ‘less important’ or ‘less worthy’ has placed a detrimental social taboo on hard, honest work. These are well-paying, high-demand positions, attainable without the typical debt of college tuition: a strong, viable option for improving unemployment.

How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

To secure Social Security before it reaches insolvency in 2034, multiple options must be considered. People are living much longer lives than in 1935 when Social Security was first established; the full retirement age needs to be raised, following the trend of life expectancy. The taxable earnings cap should be gradually eliminated over a period of time to recapture the potential revenue. And finally, the payroll tax rate may need to raise to keep the fund viable for future generations.

What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?

Education and experience can vary, but my commitment to servant leadership is what qualifies me for this office. It is time to dig deeper: we need representatives who will put aside partisan politics and work together to find the best options to move us all forward. -We need Congress to look like our nation. -We need Congress to represent our nation. -We need Congress to move past sound bites, headlines and grandstanding that serve only serve to get them re-elected. -We need Congress to actually govern. I will work to transform the current, broken status quo by constructing the government each one of us deserves: a government owned by the people, working for the people.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

Frequent, transparent communication is imperative. My office will be responsive and accountable. I will hold a minimum of four town halls in the district each year with reasonable accommodations and ample room. The events will be available live on social media, free, open to the general public and press, and announced at least one week in advance. All town halls will provide at least 30 minutes for open, unscreened questions. I will also continue to volunteer at least once a month at a local non-profit, chosen by residents of the district.
